Albuquerque, NM – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous conditions to parts of New Mexico and Colorado from Thursday evening through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Tusas Mountains including Chama, and Colorado’s Eastern San Juan Mountains. Snowfall totals could range from 3 to 6 inches in most areas, with up to 10 inches expected in the Tusas Mountains and 14 inches in the Eastern San Juan Mountains. Winds could gust as high as 75 mph in some locations, creating whiteout conditions.

Travel in affected areas, including Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass, could become extremely difficult to impossible due to blowing and drifting snow. Visibility may drop below a quarter-mile at times, and power outages are possible due to strong winds and heavy snowfall.

Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions by stocking up on emergency supplies and avoiding travel if possible. The storm is expected to subside by Friday afternoon, but lingering impacts may continue into the weekend.

Officials advise monitoring local weather updates and heeding any travel advisories. For the latest forecasts, visit the National Weather Service website.
