Chadron, Nebraska – Severe storms are set to strike across far northeast Colorado, western Nebraska, and southwest South Dakota, where a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday, threatening communities with dangerous supercells, large hail, and the potential for tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the primary threats include scattered large hail up to 3 inches in diameter, isolated damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, and a growing risk for tornadoes, especially after sunset as moisture increases across the region. The watch area extends roughly 70 miles east and west of a line from northeast of Chadron, Nebraska, to just west of North Platte.
Drivers along highways including US-385, US-20, and I-80 should be prepared for sudden severe weather, with very large hail capable of damaging vehicles and property. Local emergency management advises residents in cities like Chadron, Alliance, Sidney, and Ogallala, as well as those in northeast Colorado towns near Sterling and Julesburg, to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to seek shelter quickly.
If you live in mobile homes or areas prone to severe wind, review your safety plans now and secure outdoor objects. Power outages are possible. Stay tuned for updates, as additional warnings and advisories could be issued through the evening. The Tornado Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. MDT.
