Fort Morgan, CO- Residents across northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska face the threat of severe thunderstorms through 11 p.m. MDT Friday, with damaging winds and hail likely in multiple counties along the border region. Power outages, downed trees, and dangerous travel conditions remain possible into the night.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 509 is active for Colorado’s Larimer, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Weld, and Yuma counties, as well as Nebraska’s Banner, Chase, Cheyenne, Deuel, Dundy, Frontier, Garden, Hayes, Hitchcock, Keith, Kimball, Lincoln, Morrill, Perkins, and Red Willow counties until 11 p.m. MDT. Residents in Fort Morgan, Sterling, Greeley, Kimball, and North Platte should stay alert for sudden storm development and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Emergency managers warn that winds could exceed 60 mph along I-76 and I-80, especially in Weld, Sedgwick, and Cheyenne counties. Hail up to golf ball size may impact vehicles and crops in rural areas near Sterling, Scottsbluff, and McCook. Officials recommend securing outdoor items, avoiding unnecessary travel, and charging cell phones in case of power interruptions.

This watch area includes parts of both the South Platte River Valley and Nebraska’s High Plains, where storms have a history of causing flash flooding and scattered damage in July. Residents should monitor local alerts and be prepared to seek shelter as warnings are updated.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 509 remains in effect until 11 p.m. MDT. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
