North Platte, NE – Triple-digit heat is set to scorch Colorado and Nebraska through Saturday evening, with temperatures reaching as high as 103°F in cities like Denver and Greeley. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions as prolonged exposure could lead to heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Denver and North Platte, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. CDT (9 a.m. MDT) Friday through midnight Saturday, covering most of eastern Colorado and central to north-central Nebraska. Heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees are expected across cities including North Platte, Valentine, O’Neill, and Ogallala, as well as Aurora, Fort Morgan, and Highlands Ranch in Colorado.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity will increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Agencies recommend staying indoors during peak hours, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and limiting outdoor work or activity to early morning or evening. OSHA also advises frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
This marks the region’s first major heat event of the summer, echoing early-season heat waves seen in June 2021. Cooling centers may open in some counties if demand rises.
Advisories remain in effect through Saturday night, and further alerts could follow if conditions worsen.
