Pueblo, CO – Snow will continue across portions of Colorado’s southern mountains through this afternoon before tapering off, with slick travel conditions expected on high-elevation passes, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the eastern Sawatch Mountains and eastern San Juan Mountains, where light to occasionally moderate snow and areas of blowing snow are ongoing. Forecasters say additional snowfall amounts of up to 5 inches are possible before snow ends later today.
The snow is focused along the Continental Divide, impacting higher terrain near mountain passes and exposed roadways. While snowfall rates are not expected to be intense, the combination of steady snow and gusty winds may lead to reduced visibility and slippery driving conditions, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours.
The National Weather Service warns that untreated roads over mountain passes could become slick quickly, increasing travel risks for drivers. Motorists traveling through the advisory area are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
Snow is forecast to diminish from west to east later this afternoon as the system exits the region. Lower elevations across southern Colorado, including areas near Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and the Arkansas Valley, are expected to see little to no accumulation.
Beyond the next 24 hours, drier conditions are expected to return to the region, with improving travel conditions tonight and into the weekend once snow ends and road crews are able to clear mountain routes.
Drivers planning travel across the eastern Sawatch or San Juan Mountains later today should continue to monitor forecasts and road conditions until the advisory expires.
