Denver, Colorado – An increasingly active winter pattern is expected to take shape across Colorado and Kansas beginning Thursday, with conditions favoring above-average chances for snowfall through the following Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the central Rockies and High Plains are expected to see a more productive winter setup during the Jan. 15–21 period. Colder air will be in place more consistently, and multiple weather systems moving across the region may align with that cold air, increasing the likelihood of snow rather than rain.
In Colorado, the Front Range and eastern plains are likely to see several opportunities for accumulating snow. Cities including Denver, Fort Collins, Greeley, and Colorado Springs could experience periodic snowfall, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Travel impacts are possible along Interstate 25, Interstate 70 east of the mountains, and U.S. 36, with slick conditions developing quickly during active snow. In the mountains, already frequent snow may become more persistent, affecting passes such as Eisenhower Tunnel, Berthoud Pass, and Monarch Pass.
Across Kansas, snow chances are elevated across central and western portions of the state. Areas including Hays, Salina, Garden City, and Wichita may see multiple snow events during the period. Even light to moderate snowfall could impact travel along Interstate 70, Interstate 135, and U.S. 50, particularly if snow coincides with gusty winds across open farmland.
Temperatures during this stretch are expected to support snow lingering on untreated roads, increasing the risk of icy conditions beyond active snowfall. Commuters, truck traffic, and agricultural operations should plan for changing conditions.
Residents across Colorado and Kansas are encouraged to monitor daily updates, prepare vehicles for winter driving, and allow extra travel time during snow events. While specific timing and totals remain uncertain, winter weather advisories are likely as individual systems approach during the Jan. 15–21 window.
