Denver, Colo. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and southwest Nebraska through Saturday evening, bringing threats of large hail, damaging winds, and dangerous lightning.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. MDT for counties including Cheyenne, El Paso, Logan, Morgan, and Yuma in Colorado; Cheyenne, Sherman, and Wallace in Kansas; and Arthur, Chase, and Lincoln in Nebraska.
Storms may develop rapidly along the I-70 and U.S. 385 corridors, with the strongest cells capable of producing wind gusts above 60 mph and hail larger than quarters. Residents are urged to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard and avoid travel in storm-prone areas.
Power outages are possible, particularly in rural areas where downed lines may take longer to repair. Outdoor events should be postponed until the watch expires, and drivers should be alert for water pooling on roadways from brief but intense rainfall.
Severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued later tonight if storms strengthen, and the watch could be extended depending on storm movement.
