Goodland, Kan. – Drivers across northwest Kansas and the tri-state region woke up to dangerous visibility conditions Thursday morning as dense fog settled in, significantly reducing visibility on rural highways and interstates.

According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. MDT (10 a.m. CDT) for counties including Sherman, Thomas, Wallace, Logan, Gove, and Cheyenne in Kansas, as well as Yuma and Kit Carson in Colorado, and Dundy County in southwest Nebraska. Visibility may drop below one mile in spots, especially along U.S. Highway 36, I-70 near Colby and Oakley, and U.S. 385 near Wray and Benkelman.

Drivers should slow down, use headlights—even after sunrise—and allow extra distance between vehicles. School buses and morning commuters are advised to exercise caution, particularly in rural and less-lit areas.

This is the 15th Dense Fog Advisory issued this year by NWS Goodland, highlighting an uptick in early morning visibility threats across the High Plains. Conditions are expected to rapidly improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise.

More updates will follow if the advisory is extended or expanded.
