Goodland, KS – Drivers across northwest Kansas and eastern Colorado are facing dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog blankets the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. MDT (11 a.m. CDT) Sunday, September 21. Visibility is reduced to one-quarter mile or less in Kit Carson County, Colorado, and Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas, Logan, and Gove counties in Kansas.
The advisory covers several cities along Interstate 70, including Burlington, Goodland, Colby, Oakley, and Quinter. Officials warn that the thick fog could make travel hazardous, especially for commuters and long-haul drivers along the I-70 corridor.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra following distance to reduce the risk of accidents. “Low visibility can make it difficult to see other vehicles, intersections, and road signs until the last moment,” the National Weather Service cautioned in its statement.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late this morning as the fog lifts. However, early drivers should plan for extended travel times and use extra caution.
The fog is part of a seasonal shift in weather patterns often seen in late September, when cool overnight air and lingering ground moisture create prime conditions for visibility issues.
Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and road condition updates throughout the morning.
