Kit Carson, Colorado – Residents along the Colorado-Kansas border are on high alert as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect through 10 p.m. Monday, with damaging winds and large hail likely in several counties. Power outages, flooded roads, and hazardous travel could hit communities from Cheyenne and Kit Carson counties in Colorado to Sherman and Cheyenne counties in northwest Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers nine eastern Colorado counties—Cheyenne, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma—along with Cheyenne and Sherman counties in Kansas. The storms are expected to intensify through late afternoon and evening, especially near the I-70 corridor, bringing the risk of wind gusts topping 60 mph and hail up to golf ball size.
Local emergency officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and monitor updates from the NWS. Flash flooding may quickly develop on rural roads and highways, particularly across low-lying areas near the state line.
This Severe Thunderstorm Watch is set to expire by 10 p.m. Monday, but additional warnings are possible if storms persist or intensify. Stay tuned to local alerts and be prepared for rapid changes in weather conditions.
