Pueblo, Colorado – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across southern Colorado today as strong winds and low humidity prompt a Red Flag Warning, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
The warning is in effect through 5 p.m. MST for Teller, El Paso, Fremont, Pueblo, and Huerfano counties. Forecasters said west to northwest winds will gust between 35 and 40 mph at times, combining with dry air to significantly increase the risk of rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service, the strongest wind gusts are expected along and west of Interstate 25. These conditions can cause fires to start easily and spread quickly, especially in grassland and dry fuels.
The NWS urged residents to avoid outdoor activities that could spark a fire, including burning debris, using equipment that produces sparks, or improperly discarding cigarettes. Even small ignitions could become difficult to control under today’s conditions.
Fire weather warnings are issued when a combination of weather and fuel conditions can lead to extreme fire behavior. Officials emphasized that conditions may change rapidly throughout the afternoon as winds peak.
The alert may be especially relevant to commuters, construction crews, and outdoor workers across southern Colorado, particularly in exposed and elevated areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from weather.gov/pub and local emergency officials for any changes or additional advisories.
