Alamosa, CO – Residents across the San Luis Valley are being urged to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures this weekend, as the National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Freeze Watch from late Saturday night through Sunday morning.
According to the NWS, sub-freezing lows are possible, with temperatures expected to fall into the mid to upper 20s across Alamosa, Monte Vista, Del Norte, Sanford, San Luis, Fort Garland, and surrounding communities.
Meteorologists warn that these conditions could have significant impacts. “Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” forecasters stated early Friday.
The San Luis Valley, which sits at high elevation and is known for wide temperature swings, is especially vulnerable during early October cold snaps. Homeowners and farmers are encouraged to take precautions, including covering tender plants, draining sprinkler systems, and insulating exposed pipes.
The Freeze Watch is expected to remain in effect from the early hours of Sunday, October 5, through mid-morning, when temperatures are forecast to rebound with sunrise.
This event could mark the first widespread freeze of the fall season in the region, signaling the end of the growing season for many crops.
Residents should monitor local forecasts through the weekend and plan accordingly.
