Cheyenne Wells, CO – Residents in Cheyenne County should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures tonight as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Goodland, Kansas issues a Freeze Warning from 9 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the NWS, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25°F are expected across Arapahoe, Cheyenne Wells, and surrounding rural areas. The overnight cold may kill crops and sensitive vegetation while damaging outdoor plumbing if left unprotected.

Officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions, including draining sprinkler systems, covering exposed pipes, and bringing plants and pets indoors.

“To prevent water pipes from freezing, insulate or drain them, or allow them to drip slowly,” the NWS advised.

The chill marks the first hard freeze of the season for the eastern Colorado plains, following several mild weeks. Forecasters expect temperatures to rebound slightly by midweek, but overnight lows will continue to hover near freezing through the weekend.

Those in agricultural and ranching communities are encouraged to monitor local forecasts closely and take steps to safeguard equipment and livestock.
