Grand Junction, CO – An ice jam on the Roaring Fork River has prompted a flash flood watch for west-central Colorado, effective through Friday evening. Authorities urge caution for those near or on the river.
According to the National Weather Service, the watch affects the Central Colorado River Basin and the Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys, including Carbondale, Basalt, and Snowmass. The ice jam, caused by recent cold temperatures, could release as warmer conditions arrive this week, leading to rapid increases in water levels and flow.
Emergency management officials warn anglers and residents to move away from the river and seek higher ground if water levels rise. Ice and debris flowing downstream pose significant risks.
