Pueblo, Colorado – Heavy rain brought life-threatening flash floods to Pueblo and Huerfano counties Tuesday afternoon, with highways, city streets, and neighborhoods at risk for rapid inundation through at least 7:15 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Doppler radar tracked slow-moving thunderstorms dumping between one and four inches of rain in less than an hour across central Pueblo County and northeastern Huerfano County. Flash flooding is now ongoing in low-lying zones, including Pueblo, Pueblo West, Colorado City, and areas around Pueblo Reservoir. Officials warn that arroyos, streams, and urban streets could flood within minutes, even far from direct rainfall.

Road closures and hazardous travel are likely on I-25, U.S. 50, and surrounding rural highways. Emergency crews urge residents to avoid all non-essential driving, watch for rapidly rising water, and never cross flooded roads—most flood fatalities occur in vehicles. Residents should move valuables to higher ground, charge phones, and monitor alerts as water levels can spike unexpectedly.

This is the first significant summer flash flood event for Pueblo since 2021, with rainfall rates among the highest in recent years. Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect for central and southwestern Pueblo County, including Colorado City, until at least 7:15 p.m. More advisories may follow if storms persist or move east.
