Denver, Colorado – Heavy rain and flash flooding threaten the Palmer Divide and eastern Colorado plains today as slow-moving thunderstorms pound the region through 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, repeated thunderstorms will drench the area this afternoon and evening, with the highest risk focused on the Palmer Divide—including Castle Rock, Limon, and nearby communities. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches in just 30 minutes are possible, with local totals reaching up to 3 inches in under an hour. This is enough to quickly flood low-lying roads and creeks.

A Flood Watch is in effect for travel corridors like I-25, US-24, and Highway 86. Residents in flood-prone areas, especially those near burn scars, are urged to avoid travel when water covers roadways. It takes just 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock a person down and a foot to move most vehicles. The threat may be highest during the evening commute—charge your devices, monitor alerts, and plan for detours or delays.

This Flash Flood Watch continues until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters warn that additional watches or warnings could be issued if heavy rain persists into Wednesday.
