Denver, CO – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for southeast Park, Elbert, and southern Lincoln counties on Thursday afternoon due to high winds and low humidity, increasing wildfire risks.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, the alert will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters predict wind gusts between 30-40 mph and relative humidity levels dropping as low as 9-15%, creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to avoid any activities that may generate sparks, such as outdoor burning, using equipment that creates open flames, or discarding cigarette butts improperly. Fire officials recommend having an emergency plan in place and staying updated with local alerts.
Fire Weather Watches are issued when weather conditions have the potential to support extreme fire behavior but are not yet imminent. If conditions persist or worsen, the watch could escalate into a Red Flag Warning.
Authorities advise residents to stay vigilant, secure loose outdoor materials that could be blown by strong winds, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
