Denver, Colorado – A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for much of Colorado Sunday, as high winds and dry conditions set the stage for elevated wildfire risks. From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph combined with relative humidity levels as low as 10-14% will create dangerous conditions, especially across areas in the eastern plains and foothills.
According to the National Weather Service, the fire weather watch is in place due to the combination of gusty winds and dry terrain, which could lead to rapid wildfire spread. The Denver-Boulder area and cities like Fort Collins and Greeley will see the highest risk, with conditions critical from late morning to mid-evening.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor activities that could spark fires, including camping, burning debris, or using equipment that could produce sparks. The Fire Weather Watch covers many counties in northern and central Colorado, with the risk highest for grasslands and other dry, open spaces.
Winds will begin to die down after 8 p.m., but conditions will remain hazardous until then. Local authorities may issue further warnings if conditions worsen.
