Grand Junction, Colo. – Warm, dry air and gusty southwest winds are raising wildfire risks across northern and central Colorado’s Divide mountains today, prompting a Red Flag Warning through this evening. Winds could reach 25 mph, and haze and smoke are already visible in parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, the warning covers much of the high country from the northern Divide to the San Juan Mountains. Humidity will stay low through the day, creating critical fire conditions. A few isolated storms are expected to form over the San Juans and along the Divide this afternoon, carrying gusty winds and lightning but little rain.

Travelers along mountain passes and outdoor recreation areas should use extreme caution. Campfires, fireworks, and open burning are strongly discouraged. Those in rural areas should keep firefighting tools and water sources handy.

Forecasters say increasing moisture late week could raise the risk of dry thunderstorms Thursday and Friday, which can ignite new fires. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until tonight, with additional advisories possible later this week.
