Grand Junction, Colorado – Wildfire danger is surging across western Colorado and eastern Utah today as critical fire weather conditions combine low humidity and gusty winds, triggering a Red Flag Warning through 8 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, relative humidity is expected to plummet between 6% and 13%, while wind gusts could reach 35 mph. The warning covers northeast and east-central Utah and extends into west-central Colorado, where dry fuels could ignite rapidly.
Residents in Grand Junction, Moab, Price, and surrounding areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects, and delay any activity that could produce sparks. Travel may be hazardous in open areas due to strong crosswinds, particularly along U.S. 191 and I-70.
Temperatures are also trending about 10 degrees above average, adding to the rapid drying of vegetation. Fire crews across the region remain on high alert, and officials stress the importance of readiness: charge phones, prepare go-bags, and monitor local alerts.
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m., but additional advisories may follow if hot, dry, and windy conditions persist into the weekend.
