Colorado’s high country is waking up under a thick, wintry sky this Sunday morning as another powerful system moves in from the west. Roads are already damp and slick in spots across the Grand Junction area, and the National Weather Service warns that snow will intensify through the day — making travel across mountain passes difficult into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Junction, snow accumulations of 3 to 10 inches are expected across the central and western mountains, with locally higher totals on favorable slopes. Rain and snow are likely to develop by midday in the valleys before tapering late Monday morning. High elevations such as Vail Pass, Red Mountain Pass, and McClure Pass could see the heaviest snowfall and reduced visibility.

The Hazardous Weather Outlook issued early Sunday notes that mountain passes will be “snow-covered and slick,” urging drivers to prepare for chain laws and slow-moving conditions. Even as skies clear Monday afternoon, cold air will linger — keeping roadways icy through the early week.

Unsettled weather returns again Tuesday afternoon, with additional snow chances midweek and temperatures staying well below normal for early December. Drivers traveling after Thanksgiving or heading into early December commutes should expect changing road conditions and prepare winter safety kits before venturing into the mountains.
