Denver, CO – A powerful winter storm is moving eastward across northeastern Colorado, bringing blizzard conditions, road closures, and dangerous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall as of 3 a.m. Wednesday was near the eastern Colorado border, with wind gusts reaching 40 to 60 mph. These high winds are creating whiteout conditions and significant drifting snow. West of Akron and Limon, snowfall has begun to taper off, but winds of 30 to 45 mph continue to cause hazardous conditions.

Several major highways have been impacted by the storm. I-70 is closed from just east of Denver to Colby, Kansas, along with closures on Colorado 86 and US 24 west of Limon. Motorists are urged to check www.cotrip.org or call 511 for the latest updates on road conditions and closures.

The blizzard warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. MDT Wednesday for areas including Limon and Akron. Additional snowfall is expected to be minimal, with up to one inch of accumulation, but strong winds will persist, further reducing visibility.

Officials advise against travel, warning that conditions may be life-threatening. Those who must drive should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded.

Travel conditions are expected to improve from west to east later in the morning as the storm moves out of the region.
