Park Range, CO – An Avalanche Watch has been issued for Colorado’s Park Range region, warning of dangerous backcountry conditions beginning Friday night and lasting through Sunday evening.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the Avalanche Danger is expected to rise to High (Level 4 of 5) as heavy snowfall and strong winds impact the northern mountains this weekend.

Forecasters said the conditions could lead to large, naturally occurring avalanches starting late Friday and continuing through Sunday afternoon. The combination of deep snow accumulation and gusty mountain winds will make travel in avalanche terrain extremely hazardous.

“Expect very dangerous avalanche conditions to develop Friday night,” the center said in its bulletin, adding that slides will be “easy to trigger” once new snow builds up.

Outdoor enthusiasts, skiers, and snowmobilers are urged to avoid backcountry areas during the watch period. Conditions are expected to improve only after snowfall decreases and winds subside late Sunday.
