Denver, CO – Travelers and outdoor enthusiasts heading to Colorado’s backcountry this weekend are urged to exercise caution as avalanche risks remain elevated. New snowfall over a weak snowpack has significantly increased danger, particularly in high-elevation zones.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, areas above 9,000 feet, including Jackson, Summit, and Boulder counties, face considerable risks through the weekend. Affected regions include popular routes along the I-70 corridor. Authorities warn that even small avalanches could trigger deadly slides. Visitors to mountainous areas should check the avalanche forecast and carry proper equipment.

The National Weather Service forecasts mild weather for Denver, with highs near 51 degrees on Friday and 55 on Saturday. However, mountain areas could see additional snowfall, which may worsen conditions. Rabbit Ears Pass and surrounding high-elevation areas could accumulate up to eight inches of snow by Saturday evening.

Travelers on I-70 should plan for slower travel due to slick roads and potential closures in high-risk zones. Skiers and snowshoers are advised to avoid steep slopes and adhere to posted safety guidelines.

Looking ahead, Denver will enjoy mostly sunny skies through the New Year holiday, with a slight chance of rain or snow early Monday morning. Temperatures will peak in the 40s to low 50s next week, offering a reprieve from stormy conditions in mountain areas.
