Colorado – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for several high-elevation mountain zones in southern Colorado, where heavy snow and strong winds are creating dangerous travel conditions through early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the warning covers the Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet, including Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass, as well as the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 11,000 feet, including the Spanish Peaks and Blanca Peak.

Storm-total snow accumulations of 12 to 24 inches are expected in the Eastern San Juan Mountains, while 12 to 22 inches of snow are forecast in the Sangre de Cristo ranges. Winds are expected to gust as high as 35 to 40 miles per hour, producing areas of blowing and drifting snow and significantly reduced visibility.

Forecasters warn that travel could become very difficult to impossible, particularly over exposed mountain passes. In the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, hazardous conditions may also impact the Friday evening commute at higher elevations.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. MST Sunday. Officials strongly urge travelers to avoid high mountain travel if possible. Those who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies and check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before departing.
