College Station, Texas – Hazardous winter weather is set to move into the Brazos Valley and areas north of Houston early Saturday, creating a prolonged period of dangerous travel and increasing the risk of power outages through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston and Galveston, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday for Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Montgomery, and Washington counties. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with ice accumulations ranging from one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch. Sleet may also accumulate, though totals are expected to remain under a half inch.

Across the region, ice is expected to pose the greatest threat. Elevated roadways, bridges, and overpasses could become impassable, making travel nearly impossible at times. TxDOT officials warn that highways such as Highway 6, Highway 105, and portions of Interstate 45 north of Houston may quickly ice over as temperatures remain below freezing.

In local communities including College Station, Bryan, Conroe, The Woodlands, Brenham, Navasota, and Caldwell, ice buildup on trees and power lines could lead to scattered outages and falling limbs. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, secure backup lighting, and keep food, water, and electronic devices ready in case of extended outages.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories could be issued as conditions evolve. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511, and residents should stay alert for further updates as the storm unfolds.
