Duluth, Minnesota – A widespread Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect across much of northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin from Sunday night through noon CST Monday, with dangerously low wind chills expected across the Northland.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, wind chills are forecast to drop as low as 35 to 40 degrees below zero, particularly overnight and during the early morning hours. The coldest conditions are expected in northern Cook and Lake counties, including parts of the Boundary Waters, where wind chills may reach 40 below zero.

The advisory covers large portions of northeast and north-central Minnesota, including St. Louis, Itasca, Cass, Crow Wing, Carlton, Aitkin, Pine, Koochiching, Cook, and Lake counties, as well as northwest Wisconsin, including Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Sawyer, Washburn, Burnett, and Price counties. Cities affected include Duluth, International Falls, Hibbing, Ely, Grand Rapids, Brainerd, Aitkin, Pine City, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Grand Marais, Superior, Ashland, Hayward, and Spooner.

In addition to the cold, a Wind Advisory is in effect for southern Cook and Lake counties from 9 PM Sunday to 6 AM Monday, with northwest wind gusts up to 45 mph, potentially leading to blowing debris, downed tree limbs, and isolated power outages.

The National Weather Service warns that exposure to these wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, wear insulated layers, hats, and gloves, and use extra caution when traveling.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after midday Monday as winds weaken and wind chills rise.
