Grand Forks, North Dakota – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from noon Sunday through noon CST Monday across large portions of Minnesota and North Dakota, with dangerously low wind chills expected to threaten outdoor safety.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, wind chills may fall as low as 38 to 40 degrees below zero as strong winds combine with arctic air across the region. The advisory includes areas of central, north central, northwest, and west central Minnesota, along with northeast and southeast North Dakota.
Counties affected include much of the Red River Valley and surrounding regions, with cities such as Fargo, Grand Forks, Moorhead, Bemidji, Thief River Falls, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Devils Lake, Valley City, Wahpeton, and Roseau included in the advisory area.
The National Weather Service warns that these extreme wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, particularly during prolonged outdoor exposure. Cold-related health risks increase for those without adequate winter clothing, as well as for children, older adults, and anyone working or traveling outdoors.
Residents are urged to wear multiple layers of warm clothing, including hats and gloves, and to limit time outside when possible. Travelers should use caution, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and carry emergency supplies in case of delays or breakdowns.
The advisory remains in effect through noon Monday, with conditions expected to gradually improve thereafter as winds weaken and temperatures moderate slightly.
