Quad Cities Region – A widespread Cold Weather Advisory is in effect across portions of eastern Iowa, western Illinois, and northeast Missouri as dangerously cold wind chills move into the region late Sunday night through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, wind chills are expected to range from 20 below zero to as low as 30 below zero, depending on location and timing. The coldest conditions are forecast overnight into early Monday, with advisories remaining in effect until noon CST Monday.
The advisory covers a broad area including east central, northeast, and southeast Iowa, west central and northwestern Illinois, and parts of northeast Missouri. Cities included range from Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Iowa City, Muscatine, Clinton, Burlington, Fort Madison, Macomb, Freeport, Galena, Sterling, Mount Pleasant, and Kahoka.
Some areas of eastern Iowa are under advisory beginning as early as 11 PM Sunday, while portions of western Illinois and southeast Iowa see advisories start between 3 AM and 5 AM Monday. The National Weather Service warns that exposure to these temperatures can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, with hypothermia possible if precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers, hats, and gloves, and keep pets indoors whenever possible. Officials also advise checking on older adults and neighbors, and using space heaters safely. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Monday as wind chills moderate.
