St. Louis, Missouri – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 AM to 10 AM CST Monday for portions of Illinois and Missouri, as dangerously cold wind chills settle across the region during the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, wind chills may drop to as low as 15 degrees below zero as arctic air combines with lingering winds. The advisory includes parts of south central, southwest, and west central Illinois, along with northeast Missouri.

Illinois counties under the advisory include Greene, Macoupin, Montgomery, Adams, Brown, Pike, Calhoun, and Jersey, while Missouri counties include Knox, Lewis, and Marion. Cities within the advisory area include Quincy, Hannibal, Litchfield, Mount Sterling, and Pittsfield.

The National Weather Service warns that exposure to these wind chills could lead to hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken. The risk is greatest during the pre-dawn and early morning hours, particularly for people working outdoors, those commuting early, and individuals without adequate winter clothing.

Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers including hats and gloves, and use caution while traveling. Extra care should be taken to ensure pets have warm shelter, and that vehicles are prepared for cold-weather operation.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after mid-morning Monday as wind chills rise and winds ease.
