Savannah, GA – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for portions of southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry from 10 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Monday, as very cold air sweeps into the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston.
Forecasters expect wind chills to fall between 11 and 20 degrees, affecting a wide area including Savannah, Pooler, Garden City, Richmond Hill, Statesboro, Claxton, Metter, Hinesville, Fort Stewart, Darien, Ludowici, Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, Edisto Beach, Colleton County, and Jasper County. While temperatures will not be as extreme as those farther north, the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire are still at risk for hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
The coldest period will occur early Monday morning, when winds strengthen and temperatures dip into the 20s across much of the advisory area. NWS officials urge residents to dress in warm layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors when possible.
Emergency managers are also asking residents to check on older relatives, neighbors, and individuals in homes with inadequate heating. Portable heaters should be used safely and placed away from flammable materials, and generators or grills must never be used indoors due to carbon monoxide hazards.
More forecasts and updates will be issued as the cold air mass moves in.
