Chicago, IL – Rain and strong winds will hit the Chicago area Monday night, transitioning into wet snow on Tuesday. Forecasters warn of gusts reaching 30-35 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions into Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain will develop Monday evening and continue overnight. Areas north of I-80, including Aurora and Evanston, may see a rain-to-snow mix. Downtown Chicago is expected to experience wind-driven rain before tapering Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will drop into the low 30s overnight, with wind chills as low as 15°F by midnight.

New Year’s Eve will bring blustery conditions, with daytime highs between 27°F and 31°F. The NWS forecasts occasional light snow flurries, but accumulations will likely remain minor. As winds persist, gusts may create additional challenges for evening celebrations.

By Thursday, colder air will grip the region, with highs ranging from 26°F to 32°F. A chance of snow will increase south of I-80 late Thursday. Friday’s temperatures will plummet further, with lows nearing 9°F and highs struggling to exceed 22°F. Breezy conditions will make the bitter cold feel even harsher.

The NWS advises travelers to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for changing weather. Visibility may drop in fog or snow, especially north of I-80. Officials urge caution on roads and recommend dressing for subfreezing wind chills.

Chicagoans planning outdoor New Year’s festivities should expect cold, windy weather and potential flurries. Residents should take precautions to stay safe as winter weather intensifies.
