Eureka, CA – The National Weather Service in Eureka has issued a Frost Advisory for portions of interior northwest California, including Northern Trinity, Southern Trinity, and the Northeastern Mendocino Interior. The advisory is in effect from 9 PM Thursday evening through 10 AM Friday as temperatures drop to around 34 degrees, cold enough for frost to form in many valleys and sheltered locations.
Although temperatures will only fall slightly below the freezing threshold, a combination of light winds and radiational cooling will allow frost to develop, particularly in low-lying areas around communities such as Weaverville, Hayfork, Douglas City, Covelo, and Forest Glen. Recent rainfall and patches of fog may create localized and inconsistent frost formation, but sensitive vegetation remains at risk.
Residents are encouraged to take protective measures ahead of the cold night. Tender plants, outdoor seedlings, and unprotected garden vegetation may be damaged or killed if left uncovered. Bringing plants indoors, covering them with breathable fabric, or using frost-protection materials can help prevent losses.
By late Friday morning, temperatures are expected to rise above frost-producing levels as daytime warming returns. Those traveling early should remain mindful of slick spots in areas where frost forms on damp surfaces.
