Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Frost Advisory for much of central, western, and north-central Iowa as temperatures are expected to fall to around 32°F overnight, leading to widespread frost formation early Wednesday morning, October 22.
The advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday and includes major counties such as Polk, Story, Boone, Dallas, Madison, Warren, and Carroll. Communities including Des Moines, Ames, Marshalltown, and Fort Dodge are all within the advisory area.
Forecasters warn that frost could damage or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered. Homeowners and gardeners are encouraged to cover plants, bring potted flowers indoors, and protect any crops still in the field.
The frost will follow a blustery Tuesday, where strong northwest winds brought cooler air into the state. Winds are expected to calm overnight, allowing temperatures to drop rapidly under clear skies.
Wednesday will start cold but sunny, with afternoon highs climbing back into the 50s and 60s as conditions improve.
