Fort Wayne, IN – The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a Freeze Warning effective from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Saturday (1 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT) for much of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio, where temperatures could fall to around 30 degrees.
Counties under the warning include Elkhart, LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Allen (IN), Whitley, Wabash, Huntington, Wells, Adams, Miami, Cass, Fulton (IN), White, Grant, Jay, and Blackford in Indiana, along with Williams, Defiance, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Allen (OH) in northwest Ohio.
According to the NWS, sub-freezing temperatures could kill crops and sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may freeze and burst if not properly insulated. Officials recommend residents cover plants, bring in potted flowers, and wrap exposed pipes ahead of the coldest hours early Saturday morning.
This freeze is expected to end the growing season for much of the region, with widespread frost likely by daybreak. While temperatures should warm slightly over the weekend, Saturday morning will bring the coldest air of the fall so far.
