Colchester, VT – The Chittenden County Sheriff’s Office is honoring the memory of U.S. Customs Special Agent Ted Webb, who was killed in the line of duty on this day in 1926 during a Prohibition-era investigation.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Agent Webb succumbed to a gunshot wound after being shot by a suspected bootlegger in Sunderland Hollow, Colchester. Webb and his partner had stopped a vehicle they had followed from Swanton when the occupant allegedly opened fire, striking both officers.
Authorities said the suspect was later apprehended in New York and convicted of second-degree murder on November 30, 1926. He was sentenced to life in prison but paroled on December 20, 1949.
Webb, a husband and father of three, is remembered today for his service and sacrifice during a turbulent time in Vermont’s history. The Sheriff’s Office shared the remembrance to mark nearly a century since his death in the line of duty.
