Douglas, GA – Wildfires could spread rapidly across southeast Georgia through 8 p.m. Saturday as strong winds and dry air combine to create explosive fire conditions across multiple counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Atkinson, Coffee, Bacon, Appling, and Jeff Davis counties, where northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph are aligning with humidity levels dropping to 23 percent. These conditions significantly increase the likelihood of fast-moving and unpredictable fire behavior.
Communities including Douglas, Alma, Baxley, and Hazlehurst sit in the highest risk zone, where drought-stricken vegetation acts as ready fuel. Fire crews warn that even small sparks—from equipment, vehicles, or outdoor burning—could ignite fires that spread quickly across fields and wooded areas. Rural roadways and open farmland are especially vulnerable through the late afternoon hours.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Emergency officials also recommend keeping water sources nearby and reporting smoke immediately.
The most dangerous window continues through early Saturday evening, with conditions easing after sunset. Additional fire weather alerts could be issued if dry patterns persist into early next week.
