Virginia Beach, VA – A Flood Watch goes into effect at 2 p.m. Thursday as heavy rain moves into coastal Virginia, with the heaviest downpours expected late Thursday night into early Friday. Up to 2–4 inches of rain could fall in some areas, raising the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and poor drainage zones.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the watch covers much of southeast Virginia and portions of northeast North Carolina, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Suffolk, and Chesapeake. Rainfall rates could quickly overwhelm streets and creeks, especially near the Elizabeth River and along heavily traveled routes like Interstate 64.

Drivers should prepare for water-covered roads during the Thursday evening commute and into the overnight hours. Those living in flood-prone neighborhoods should secure property and be ready to move to higher ground if conditions worsen. Outdoor plans Thursday night could be impacted by heavy downpours and lightning.

While rain will taper Friday, lingering showers could still cause ponding on roadways. Drier and sunnier weather is expected to return by Saturday, offering a calmer weekend ahead.
