Wakefield, VA – Coastal residents in Virginia and northeast North Carolina are waking up to patchy dense fog Saturday morning, creating reduced visibility for drivers and boaters. Forecasters say the fog will gradually lift later in the morning, leaving behind mostly sunny skies.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, temperatures today are expected to reach the upper 70s in the northeast and mid-80s southwest. A backdoor cold front will move through the region later Saturday into Sunday, bringing cooler air and a slight chance of showers in northwestern parts of the forecast area.

Beachgoers should use extra caution this weekend. Meteorologists warn of a moderate rip current risk across all area beaches Saturday and a high risk on Sunday, which could make swimming dangerous.

Sunday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions with highs in the lower 70s to near 80. Cooler, fall-like weather will continue into Monday, with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 70s. The autumn equinox arrives Monday.

Travelers are advised to allow extra time this morning due to limited visibility in fog-prone areas. Beach visitors are urged to heed local lifeguard warnings and avoid entering the surf during high-risk rip current periods.
