Norfolk, Virginia – Coastal Virginia faces a 50%–60% chance of moderate winter storm impacts this weekend, with hazardous travel and coastal conditions possible between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a rapidly intensifying low-pressure system is expected to develop along the Southeast coast Saturday before moving northward off the Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday. The system will interact with a very cold air mass already in place across the region, increasing the likelihood of winter precipitation and strong winds.

Snow probabilities between 50% and 60% extend across coastal Virginia, including the Hampton Roads region and areas near Interstate 64, Interstate 95, and U.S. 13. While rain or a rain-snow mix remains possible closer to the immediate coastline, inland coastal communities have a higher likelihood of accumulating snow depending on the storm’s exact track and thermal profile.

Travel impacts are most likely from Saturday night into Sunday, when precipitation intensity and wind speeds are expected to peak. Gusty winds may reduce visibility on bridges and elevated roadways, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, and could complicate snow removal efforts.

Forecasters stress that uncertainty remains regarding snowfall totals, precipitation type, and coastal impacts. Strong onshore winds coinciding with elevated tides may increase the risk of minor coastal flooding and rough surf.

Residents are urged to monitor official forecasts and prepare for potential travel disruptions. Weekend commuters, port workers, and military personnel should anticipate delays if conditions deteriorate.
