Virginia Beach, VA – A High Wind Warning is in effect for Virginia Beach, the Maryland Beaches, and Virginia’s Eastern Shore as powerful northeast winds up to 40 mph with gusts near 55 mph are forecast to impact the region from early Sunday through late Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
The strongest winds are expected between 2 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday in Virginia Beach, and from 4 a.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday across Accomack, Northampton, and Maryland Beaches counties.
According to the NWS, the damaging winds are likely to bring down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages across coastal areas. Travel may be hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles on bridges and open stretches near the Chesapeake Bay.
Residents are advised to remain indoors during peak winds, avoid windows, and secure outdoor items that could become airborne. Emergency officials recommend charging phones and flashlights ahead of potential outages.
This storm marks one of the strongest early-season wind events for the Mid-Atlantic coast, with lingering gusts and choppy surf possible into Monday morning.
