Charleston, South Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Charleston metro area and surrounding Lowcountry counties as accumulating snow is expected to significantly disrupt travel through Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast across Charleston, Dorchester, Inland Berkeley, and Tidal Berkeley counties. The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday until 1 p.m. EST Sunday.
Cities and communities impacted include Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Saint George, and Daniel Island.
Forecasters warn that travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially during periods of steady snowfall. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and snow-covered, with conditions deteriorating quickly in areas that rarely experience winter precipitation.
Snowfall of this magnitude is uncommon for the South Carolina Lowcountry and may overwhelm road treatment capabilities, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Even small elevation changes, shaded roadways, and coastal bridges could become hazardous.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Motorists who must be on the road should carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight, and allow extra time to reach their destination. Road conditions across South Carolina can be checked by calling 511.
The prolonged duration of the storm may lead to extended travel disruptions into Sunday, affecting weekend commuters, service workers, and emergency operations.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as conditions evolve.
