Charleston, South Carolina – Coastal South Carolina faces a 50% chance of moderate winter storm impacts this weekend, with hazardous travel and coastal conditions possible from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a rapidly strengthening low-pressure system is expected to develop along the Southeast coast Saturday before tracking northward off the Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday. The system will interact with an unusually cold air mass across the eastern United States, creating the potential for winter precipitation and strong winds along the South Carolina coast.

Snow probabilities around 50% extend across portions of coastal South Carolina, including areas near U.S. 17, Interstate 26, and the Interstate 95 corridor. While rain or a rain-snow mix is more likely near the immediate coastline, inland coastal counties could see periods of accumulating snow depending on the storm’s exact track and intensity.

Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly Saturday night into Sunday as precipitation rates increase and winds strengthen. Gusty winds could reduce visibility, particularly on bridges and causeways, and may complicate road treatment efforts if snow develops.

Forecasters caution that uncertainty remains regarding precipitation type, snowfall totals, and the storm’s precise path. Coastal impacts may be enhanced by strong onshore winds, rough surf, and elevated tides, increasing the risk of minor coastal flooding during peak tidal cycles.

Residents are advised to monitor official forecasts, prepare for possible travel disruptions, and secure coastal property. Weekend commuters, service workers, and port-area employees should plan for delays if conditions worsen.
