Charleston, S.C. – Thunderstorms are expected to roll through South Carolina this afternoon and evening, with heavy downpours, dangerous lightning, and heat index values climbing past 100 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, storms will fire along the coast between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. before shifting inland through tonight. High temperatures will push into the upper 80s and low 90s, but humidity will make it feel between 103 and 105 degrees.

The most significant storm threat is centered over the Lowcountry and Pee Dee regions, where areas such as Charleston, Summerville, and Walterboro face an elevated risk of frequent lightning and localized flooding. Inland communities including Orangeburg and Florence could see storms intensify into the evening, raising hazards for drivers along I-26 and I-95.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid travel on flood-prone roads. Anyone spending time outside should monitor weather alerts, drink plenty of water, and limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat.

Storm chances remain high through tonight, with additional alerts possible into early Sunday.
