Charleston, SC – A strong blast of Arctic air will grip southeast Georgia and South Carolina beginning Monday night, prompting a Freeze Warning and Lake Wind Advisory across the Lowcountry and Central Midlands, with forecasters warning of subfreezing temperatures, strong winds, and dangerous lake conditions through Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, temperatures are expected to fall into the mid to upper 20s inland and near freezing along the coast, with wind chills dipping into the upper teens to lower 20s before sunrise Tuesday.
The Freeze Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Tuesday, affecting cities including Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah, North Charleston, Hilton Head, and Statesboro. A Lake Wind Advisory is also active for Lake Moultrie and other area lakes, where gusts up to 30 knots and 2–3 foot waves will create hazardous conditions for small craft.
Forecasters caution that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and damage unprotected pipes, while blustery winds will make it feel significantly colder. Residents are urged to cover plants, bring pets indoors, and secure outdoor items ahead of the cold front’s arrival.
Boaters should remain off area lakes during the advisory period. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Tuesday afternoon as winds weaken and temperatures begin to rebound.
