Charleston, SC – A widespread freeze is set to settle over the Lowcountry and coastal Georgia overnight, with temperatures dropping below freezing and threatening crops, gardens, and exposed plumbing by daybreak Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight through 10 a.m. Wednesday for southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 28 degrees across communities including Charleston, Savannah, Summerville, and Hinesville.
The coldest conditions will develop between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., especially across inland areas such as Dorchester, Berkeley, and Effingham counties, where frost will be more widespread. Coastal spots like Mount Pleasant and Hilton Head may stay slightly warmer but can still see patchy frost in sheltered areas.
Sensitive vegetation and early spring crops face a high risk of damage. Residents should cover plants, bring pets indoors, and protect exposed pipes by insulating or allowing faucets to drip overnight.
Temperatures will climb quickly after sunrise Wednesday, but additional cold mornings remain possible, and further alerts could be issued across the region.
