Wilmington, NC – Drivers across the Cape Fear region could run into slick streets and bursts of heavy rain before the Monday morning commute as showers and thunderstorms spread across coastal North Carolina overnight.
Saturday remains warm and quiet across Wilmington with abundant sunshine pushing temperatures to around 74°F. Light winds and dry air will make for a calm day along the coast, beaches, and inland communities through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a shift begins Sunday afternoon with scattered showers developing after 2 p.m., followed by steadier rain and possible thunderstorms after 8 p.m. Sunday night. Rain continues through Monday with temperatures rising to around 75°F and southerly wind gusts reaching 30 mph.
Rainfall totals between 0.50 and 0.75 inches could create ponding on major roadways including U.S. 17, U.S. 74, and sections of I-140, particularly during heavier bursts Monday morning. Coastal winds may also create choppy conditions along the Cape Fear River and nearby barrier islands.
Showers gradually decrease Monday night as cooler air filters into southeastern North Carolina, with overnight lows dropping to around 36°F. Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs near 51°F, bringing a much cooler and drier pattern.
Additional updates may be issued if stronger thunderstorms develop as the system moves across the Carolina coast early Monday.
