Newport, NC – Residents of eastern North Carolina are bracing for a wet and potentially hazardous start to the week. A Moderate Rip Current Risk will persist along coastal areas from 8 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday evening, and conditions could worsen with excessive rainfall expected to impact the region Monday and Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the moderate rip current risk extends across Onslow, Carteret, and the Outer Banks from Sunday morning until Sunday evening. Those heading to the beach should stay out of the water, especially during the daytime hours when rip currents are most dangerous. A flood watch is also in effect for parts of the region, with heavy rainfall expected starting Monday. Showers and thunderstorms will develop throughout the day, bringing the potential for urban flooding, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
By Monday evening and into Tuesday, 1-2 inches of rain could accumulate, with higher totals possible in isolated areas. Areas around Morehead City, Newport, and Havelock should take extra precautions as roads could become flooded, making travel hazardous. The National Weather Service advises drivers to avoid unnecessary trips and use alternate routes when possible.
In addition to the rainfall, coastal residents should remain cautious of rip currents through Sunday evening. If you plan to be near the ocean, stay well above the surf and follow all posted safety advisories. Spotter activation is not expected at this time, but emergency management officials are monitoring the situation closely.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will see continued rainfall, which could exacerbate flooding risks. Forecasts indicate that the region will remain under a flood watch until Tuesday night. Stay tuned for further updates as conditions evolve.
Five-Day Outlook: Expect showers likely through Wednesday, with clearing skies by Thursday. Temperatures will stay in the mid-70s before a warm-up towards high 80s by the weekend. Stay prepared and follow local advisories for the latest weather updates.
