Newport, N.C. – A stretch of unsettled weather will grip eastern North Carolina beginning Sunday, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected to linger through midweek. Localized downpours could quickly flood low-lying roads, especially during the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, patchy fog will lift today before skies turn sunny with highs near 88. Conditions will change rapidly Sunday, when scattered storms are likely to develop by late morning, producing gusts up to 25 mph and rainfall totals topping a half inch in spots.

Communities from Morehead City to Havelock should prepare for reduced visibility, slick highways, and possible ponding on U.S. Route 70 and secondary roads. Evening storms may linger overnight Sunday into Monday, keeping travel hazardous.

Utility crews may also face scattered power outages as gusty winds combine with lightning through Tuesday. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded streets, secure outdoor items, and keep devices charged in case of outages.

Showers are likely each day through Wednesday, with brief dry breaks possible but little lasting sunshine. Another round of storms could move in again late next week.
