Newport, NC – Boaters and mariners along the North Carolina coast are urged to exercise caution as dense fog continues to impact visibility in key waterways. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until noon EDT Friday, affecting multiple marine zones.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City, dense fog is reducing visibility to 1 nautical mile or less in coastal waters from Duck to Oregon Inlet, as well as Albemarle, Croatan, and Roanoke Sounds and the Alligator River. The fog is expected to persist overnight and gradually improve by midday Friday.

The limited visibility presents navigation challenges, especially for small vessels and commercial traffic. Mariners are advised to proceed cautiously, use proper fog signals, ensure running lights are on, and rely on radar and compass navigation when necessary.

This advisory comes as seasonal weather shifts bring fluctuating marine conditions along North Carolina’s coast. Fog events such as this are common in spring due to temperature variations between the air and water.

Boaters are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather information and heed all safety precautions while navigating affected waters. For real-time updates, visit the National Weather Service website or listen to marine radio broadcasts.
